As a designer at Studio Butch, I had the opportunity to help imagine a brand new pop-up retail space in JFK Airport for Delta Airlines in collaboration with our partners at Wieden+Kennedy.

Our brief was to design an aviation-inspired retail space with an upscale, yet approachable feel that allowed members to earn additional frequent flyer miles by purchasing artisan-created products and gifts from around the world.

Our rounded, brushed metal exterior emulates the fuselage of a classic Delta plane, while large glowing archways guide guests inside to explore.

Working window shades on the exterior of the structure can be pulled up to provide a view into the space to passers-by. Guests are invited to browse a larger catalog online through various screens scattered throughout the space that blend in with the same airplane window profile.

Every item in the shop was sourced from various Delta destinations and could be purchased with loyalty points gained through Delta’s SkyMiles program, giving people a reason to spend their points on something other than flights.

The most prominent feature of the space was the many airplane window-shaped openings that lined the walls housing digital screens, or alcoves for product display.

Our cloud motif elevated the space and brought a sense of playfulness to the entire experience. We utilized video, audio, and dynamic lighting to immerse guests in the experience while maintaining a relatively small physical footprint for the structure.

Custom graphics were created to line the inside of the product displays, each being based on the objects country of origin reinforcing their global provenance

A massive airplane window screen contains photos and videos from various Delta destinations, providing a large-scale photo opportunity and engagement to the foot traffic in the JFK terminal.
